One is racist and the other is sexist. However, I do watch RuPaul's Drag Race, because I enjoy seeing the people behind the drag. I do think that the term "fishy" is horrible and insulting to women, because it is used only to describe a man that looks a lot like a woman - the more a man looks a woman, the more "fishy" he is, because woman = fishy. As a female viewer this is offensive, and considering these men make money making fun of women, can they just get rid of "fishy?" I would be against someone referring to a gay man as serving up s**t.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-6260372802865481522014-05-04T14:12:59.973-07:002014-05-04T14:12:59.973-07:00(another anonymous)
Thank you for writing this art...(another anonymous)
Thank you for writing this article. I googled this issue specifically because i am also offended, as a woman, to hear this phrase used. I love RuPaul and the drag race shows but since hearing this term i've found my perspective on the show has changed considerably. There is no beating around the bush, this phrase is derogatory and even though some may not relate it to vaginas or indeed any sort of insult to women, it still has it's roots in a misogynistic society.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-25357799888194781412014-04-18T22:00:39.286-07:002014-04-18T22:00:39.286-07:00This is very interesting. Thank you for the post Q...This is very interesting. Thank you for the post QueerBlackFeminist. I am an avid drag race viewer and cisgender female. And the Fishy term really pisses me off too because of my assumed connotation of 'fishy' vagina. I appreciate hearing both sides of the argument. To me, it does speak to general sexism in our society. I have a real problem with the term 'Douchebag' for the same reason. Women's vaginas should have nothing to do with either of these terms.hrwrbrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15565806275806452871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-58957433597540957912014-04-06T06:34:35.089-07:002014-04-06T06:34:35.089-07:00The fishy term never sat well with me either - but...The fishy term never sat well with me either - but having someone explain to me as 'there's something fishy about that woman' actually makes sense. I can't think of any my gay mates or drag performers using the term as meaning a smelly vag. I Love the show but a good portion of the audience is women and if they are feeling disrespected then its time to respect them by simply asking the host and contestents not use that term. And before someone says just don't watch. Then there is no show with out the female viewers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-16895423263222398792013-08-25T11:50:51.918-07:002013-08-25T11:50:51.918-07:00@anonymous #2, I may have read and listened to you...@anonymous #2, I may have read and listened to your feedback if you hadn't started out with your "nonsense banter" statement. As the anonymous queen above stated "fishy" has nothing to with vagina, nor smell.

It comes from "fishy" in the sense of "suspicious". A queen who is serving fish is a queen who looks so much like a woman you starting to have doubts about her being a man.

@Nancy:
You apparently did not understand what anonymous said. If the term "fishy" was once used to insult drag queens then ofcourse drag queens can "take it back". Again, "serving fish" in drag culture has no etymological connection to literal fish or vagina.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-65187213957169444152013-04-26T09:39:02.065-07:002013-04-26T09:39:02.065-07:00Thank you! I am a gay man... when I was in my early 20s and just coming out, the older men would go on about not wanting fish and other seafood related misogyny. It made me cringe and to hear it on RuPaul's Drag Race every week makes me sad. I agree with Nancy, there's nothing to "take back" because men who make a living looking like women are still men. The word should be struck from the drag lexicon.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-64683597181176021262013-04-24T09:11:46.286-07:002013-04-24T09:11:46.286-07:00Anonymous Queen - for you to take something back, ...Anonymous Queen - for you to take something back, it has to refer to you in the first place. You are a man, not a woman. You do not have the right to take back a term that was never used to refer to your genitals. It means exactly what it sounds like, so you really need to save your offense and listen to what we women are saying. You wouldn't have drag without us, at least respect us before pretending to be us.Nancyhttp://donttypeangry.tumblr.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3416480746157493203.post-2704432573287910122013-04-23T00:14:21.578-07:002013-04-23T00:14:21.578-07:00I'm a fishy queen, and I constantly serve fish...I'm a fishy queen, and I constantly serve fish and I can guarantee you that 100% of the time when i use this term or hear it, I do not think of stinky vagina at all. Maybe it's different in Sydney australia, but serving fish was another way of taking something back and making it a positive, This is how I know the term to have originagted. Unknowing person says "theres something fishy about that woman" because they can tell theres something slightly different that they look like a woman, but it might not all be as it seems. Thats mine and the general Sydney drag queen populace idea of how the term originated, I feel a bit offended that you would insinuate I would like to call myself a stinky vagina..... Also, did not know that RuPaul supports Shirley Q. Liquor. This makes me sad. :(Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
